A British lance corporal was killed today and three soldiers wounded, one seriously, by Arabs who attacked soldiers bathing in a lake at the Sachaneh village near the Jewish settlement of Beth Alpha. The Arabs stole the soldiers’ clothes and escaped.
Troops and armed cars pursued the rebels.
An extraordinary session of the Jewish National Assembly was called for Aug. 17 to discuss the political situation.
The Hebrew laborite daily, Davar, reported from Arab sources that a majority of the members of the Arab Supreme Committee have voted for cessation of terrorism and for establishment of a special bureau to prepare for the arrival of the Royal Commission of inquiry.
Only the Grand Mufti, Haj Amin el Husseini, fought against this decision, Davar said, threatening to bolt the committee. Subsequently, the committee accepted, as a compromise measure, a decision to summon local strike committees to a conference next week to discuss continuation of the strike.
The meeting will also take up proposals for ending current disorders submitted by Emir Abdullah, Arab ruler of Transjordan, who is acting as intermediary between the Government and the Palestine Arabs.
