The administrative committee of the Jewish Agency for Palestine opened its two-day conference this morning with a report by Dr. Chaim Weizmann, president of the Agency, on the latest developments in the critical Palestine situation.
Members of the committee, comprising Zionists and non-Zionists from America and Europe, were profoundly stirred by the report.
Dr. Weizmann is understood to have given an account of his lengthy conference Monday with Colonial Secretary William Ormsby-Gore, during which the question of suspension of Jewish immigration into the Holy Land to halt the Arab disorders is believed to have been chief topic of discussion.
Dr. Maurice J. Karpf and Morris Waldman of New York are attending the sessions as American non-Zionist members of the committee. Dr. Maurice Hexter, a Palestine resident, also represents American non-Zionists at the conference.
The meeting opened under the chairmanship of Professor Herbert Speyer, with forty members in attendance.
The morning session took up discussion of the Agency’s financial affairs. Discussion of political matters was expected to wait on the expected action by the British Cabinet on the question of immigration suspension.
It was learned that official Government circles are considering application of martial law in the Holy Land if the violence attending the Arab general strike against Jewish immigration does not abate.
An official communique on the British Cabinet meeting failed to specify the topics under discussion.
