Dr. Albert Einstein’s attack on the doctrine that Darwin’s theory of struggle for existence justified the teaching of the necessity of competition between individuals in a “destructive economic struggle” drew the approval of the New York Times in an editorial yesterday.
“But at this juncture of the world’s affairs,” The Times said, “when Fascist nations are proclaiming their superiority over the rest of mankind, their readiness to prove it by force of arms, their joy in the struggle for supremacy, it is well to hear one of the great thinkers of our time picture men as something finer than Nietzsche’s Superman who knew no mercy.”
Dr. Einstein’s declaration was made at the convocation of the University of the State of New York, at which the degree of Doctor of Science was conferred upon him.
