Israel Rokach, recently selected by the Government to fill the contested mayoralty of Tel Aviv, told its Municipal Council today he was ready to cooperate with all parties and would arrange new elections if cooperation were impossible.
After a heated debate in which labor councillors protested Government interference in Tel Aviv’s elections and Mr. Rokach was denounced for allegedly approaching the Government for the appointment, a resolution was adopted by a vote of 8 to 7 expressing distrust in the mayor.
The left-wing councillors proposed the exclusion of Mayor Rokach from all positions in the municipal administration. Mr. Rokach denied asking the Government for the appointment.
