The municipality of Frankfurt-on-the-Main refused today to turn over its priceless Judaica collection to the anti-Jewish department of the Institute for the History of the New Germany, which is opening tomorrow at Munich University.
The collection is maintained by foundations originally established by Jews and is one of the best of its kind in the world.
The Municipality explained that it was willing to support any branch the institute wished to establish at Frankfurt, but would not permit transfer of the collection from the city because it was indispensable to scientific work at Frankfurt University and it formed an inseparable part of the city’s library.
The opening of the institute’s anti-Jewish department will be attended by Government officials and Nazi Party leaders. An official announcement said it would be the most important anti-Jewish meeting of the season. Prof. Walter Frank, head of the department, will deliver the principal address on “German Science and the Jewish Question.”
After the ceremonies, a three-day conference will be held on the Jewish question at which twenty professors will speak.
