The new Lord Reading made his maiden speech in the House of Lords today, supporting the Government’s public order bill to prohibit political uniforms and curb organizations endangering the peace.
He said that “a real debt of gratitude is due the Jewish community for having borne the brunt of the attack that has been made on public liberty,” adding that “the onslaught on them is only an attempt to distract attention from the attack on the free institutions of the country.”
The address was made on the bill’s second reading in the house. Lord Reading is the son of the Marquess of Reading, Rufus Daniel Isaacs, who died last December 30.
