It was officially announced here yesterday that the Jewish merchants in Tripoli’s new quarter will be compelled to keep their stores open on the Sabbath. Failure to observe an ordinance ordering stores to be kept open led recently to the arrest of 214 Jews and the flogging of three others.
According to the announcement, the Governor of Tripoli permits the merchants to open at ten in the morning, later than the usual opening hour, to enable them to attend Sabbath services in the synagogues. It states he has also promised special privileges for Jews who will employ non-Jews for work on the Sabbath.
