You can search high and low in the new telephone directory and you won’t find a cafe. Its a “Kaffeestube” or “Kaffeehaus” now, run no longer by a cafetier, but by a “Kaffeewirt” or, better yet, a true German “Kaffeehausbesitzer.”
It is a part of the Nazi drive against “foreignisms” in use in the German language that has prompted the Central Reichspostamt to drop certain foreign designations from the directory.
The “Tanzlokal” has blossomed out as a “Tanzraum,” if you are seeking a dance hall, or a “Tanzzimmer” (dance room), Similarly, the “Weinlokal” has become a “Weinstube.” The “Etablissement” (establishment) is another of the words that will no longer be found.
As far as “Aryans” are concerned, there is no longer a “Konfection,” or store where one may buy ready-made dresses. Der Angriff, organ of Propaganda Minister Paul Joseph Goebbels, boasts that this word has now been stricken from use in the dress industry, and “Germans will not be forced to recall the times when Jews controlled the dress industry.”
