Many errors in previous accounts are corrected and a new view given of Mordecai Manual Noah in early American history in “Major Noah: American Jewish Pioneer” — the first book-length biography of an American Jew to be published by the Jewish Publication Society.
The author, Dr. Isaac Goldberg, found much new material in his research including dozens of letters in Major Noah’s hand. Major Noah was a native of Philadelphia and was noted for his versatility. The major combined patriotism with loyalty to Judaism.
In his long career Major Noah served his country as diplomat in Africa, edited several newspapers, wrote a number of plays, was an orator in politics and in the synagogue, defended the Jews against prejudice abroad and at home and was sheriff of New York City.
