The question whether Palestine has sufficient armed forces to prevent further disturbances was raised in the House of Commons today by Col. Josiah Wedgwood, Laborite.
Colonial Secretary William Ormsby-Gore, replying, said it was “never possible for armed forces to be absolutely sure of preventing violence.
He added, however, that arrangements had been made “for dealing effectively with disturbances, should they recur.”
Col. Wedgwood, pressing the subject, demanded that Lieut.-Gen. John Greer Dill, commander-in-chief of British military forces in the Holy Land, be given more power, alleging failure of the policy of saying “please” to the Grand Mufti (Moslem spiritual leader) and “sacrificing our friends.” The Colonial Secretary asked that the demand be put in writing.
