Gov. George H. Earle today sharply rebuked the “Patriotic Order of Sons of America” for a protest it had registered with him against the appointment of a naturalized citizen, Albert M. Greenfield, as chairman of the committee to celebrate the sesquicentennial of the Constitution.
In a letter to State Secretary Charles B. Helms of the society, signer of the protest, the Governor declared that all American citizens, whether they were natives or naturalized, were equal.
Stating that he need not apologize to anyone for the appointment, Gov. Earle listed Mr. Greenfield qualifications for the post and emphasized that race and religion should play no role in the life of the American people.
Gov. Earle’s stand in the matter received the endorsement of Federal Judge Johnson, former national president of the society.
