Jewish students of King Stefan Batori University here went on strike today in protest against virtual “ghetto” regulations which have been quietly introduced by individual professors bowing to Nationalist violence-enforced demands.
Although no official orders have been issued, the students are being compelled to submit to segregation. They are forced to stand for hours in lecture rooms while, in laboratories, they are ordered to stand at special tables or appear only on specified days.
In explanation of their strike, for which they risk a year’s suspension or permanent expulsion, the Jewish students issued the following statement:
“We refuse to be driven into a ghetto openly or clandestinely. We are here to study and will not lightly resign our rights and honor. We therefore will not take part in any practical work until our rights are fully restored. We are sure that our decision is understood by the university authorities. A number of professors and students are supporting us, but the general position of the Jewish students is worse than ever before.”
