Pointing out that high taxation now imposed on men of wealth precludes the large gifts formerly made to educational institutions, President Cyrus Adler of the Jewish Theological Seminary said today the Seminary and other educational institutions must now broaden the base of their support.
He spoke at the Golden Jubilee luncheon of the Women’s League of the United Synagogue dedicated to the Seminary’s semi-centennial anniversary observance. The league is holding its nineteenth annual convention at the Hotel Schenley here.
At the afternoon session Mrs. Samuel Spiegel was elected for the eleventh time as president. Mrs. Cyrus Adler, Philadelphia, was elected first vice-president; Mrs. Elias L. Solomon, New York, treasurer, Mrs. Morris Klein, New York, recording secretary and Mrs. David Kass, New York, corresponding secretary.
At a banquet tonight Dr. Robert Gordis, New York, declared that Judaism survived because, unlike other ancient civilizations, it was inseparable from religion. He added that it was the destiny of America to be a new world Jewish center and that the trend was towards Conservative Judaism as apart from Orthodoxy and Reform.
