The Arabs will never accept the partitioning or cantonization of Palestine, Arabic newspapers declared today in commenting on reports in London that the Royal Commission favored setting up Arab and Jewish divisions in the Holy Land.
Editorials denounced the plan as “a Jewish proposal” supported by “a small group among the English.”
The Arabic newspapers quoted High Commissioner Sir Arthur Grenfell Wauchope as telling the Arab Supreme Committee during an interview last Thursday: “No man in the world, except the Royal Commission members, knows the content of the report.”
Sir Arthur, according to the newspapers, thanked the Arab leaders for their recent manifesto urging peace, and he asked maintenance of peace during the holy Moslem month of Nebimussa.
The Arabs demanded demolition of the jetty erected at Tel Aviv, contending it was ruining the trade of the neighboring Jaffa port. The High Commissioner was quoted as replying that the Jews had been forced to build their own port, that the Palestine Government did not intend either to demolish the jetty or enlarge the Jaffa port, nor would it build a joint harbor for both cities.
The Palestine Post, in an editorial today, praised a memorandum submitted to the Royal Commission by the Jewish Agency for Palestine. The Post said the two fundamental principles of Jewish immigration are that it will be determined by the country’s absorptive capacity and that the Jews are determined to live with the Arabs on terms of concord and mutual respect.
