Before more than 200 orthodox rabbis from various parts of the United States and Canada, Rabbi Joseph Konvitz, of Newark, today appealed to the United States to admit more refugees from persecution, and asked Great Britain to support Jewish efforts in Palestine.
Addressing the opening session of the Union of Orthodox Rabbis annual convention at the Hotel Ostend, Rabbi Konvitz, the president, lauded the American form of government and said that “the present administration has set an example for believers in democracy everywhere.”
He expressed the hope that the United States, “which has enabled us to come here years ago and make our contribution to the country’s welfare may soon find it feasible to give asylum to a greater number of those who are fleeing from the terrors of persecution overseas.”
Calling for a blessing for King George on the occasion of his coronation, Rabbi Konvitz said the future of Jewry in Palestine “is inextricably linked with the future of Britain” and asked England’s support “in the interests of our very future, our aspirations, our monumental achievements and the toil and labor of our pioneers.”
