Despite an official Arab boycott of the coronation celebrations, this city today presented a gala appearance in honor of King George’s crowning.
Main streets of both the new and old quarters of the city were brilliantly illumined by flood lights. Official buildings and synagogues were lavishly decorated with bunting and flags. A giant Mogen David covered the front of the headquarters of the Jewish Agency for Palestine.
The Arab Supreme Committee yesterday declared a “state of mourning” in connection with the coronation as a protest against the Government’s grant of 770 labor immigration certificates for the four-months ending July 31. Privately, however, Arab leaders were understood to be pleased at the low immigration schedule, the smallest in many years.
The committee cabled Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin, announcing its decision to declare a “state of mourning” and reiterating assertions
that nothing short of complete stoppage of Jewish immigration would satisfy the Arabs.
The Jewish Agency, in deference to the coronation celebrations, deferred issuing a statement on the schedule.
