The British Government has made formal representations to the Italian Government concerning anti-British propaganda broadcasts to Palestine, Foreign Secretary Anthony Eden announced in the House of Commons today.
The British Government takes “the strongest objection” to anti-British broadcasts from the Bari radio station, Capt. Eden said. He added that the broadcasts had shown improvement lately.
The statement was made in reply to Lieutenant-Commander R.T. Fletcher, Laborite, who had asked about anti-British propaganda in Palestine.
Mr. Fletcher also asked about compensation for loss of life and personal injury as a result of last year’s disturbances in Palestine. William G.A. Ormsby-Gore, the Colonial Secretary, replied that approval had been given for such compensation.
Proposals for compensation for damage for certain classes of property are now under consideration, Mr. Ormsby-Gore said. Col. Josiah Wedgwood, Laborite, demanded a speedy decision in view of the fact the damage occurred last year.
The Colonial Secretary replied that “damage was continuous during the past year” and that “I have to ask the concurrence of the Treasury since all questions of compensation are complicated.”
