Ort Congress Votes to Extend Activities in Vocational Retraining and Emigration Aid

THE FOURTH CONGRESS OF THE WORLD ORT UNION, ORGANIZATION FOR JEWISH VOCATIONAL RETRAINING, CLOSED LAST NIGHT ADOPTING A 1938 BUDGET OF $820,000 AND ELECTING A CENTRAL COMMITTEE OF 42 MEMBERS. THE AMERICAN MEMBERS ARE B.C. VLADECK AND LOUIS BOUDIN, BOTH OF NEW YORK.

MORE THAN 100 DELEGATES FROM TWELVE COUNTRIES ATTENDED THE CONGRESS AND RE-ELECTED DR. LEON BRAMSON, DR. DAVID LVOVITCH AND DR. AARON C. SINGALOWSKY AS MEMBERS OF THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE. DR. BRAMSON WAS ALSO RE-ELECTED PRESIDENT AND RECEIVED AN OVATION.

THE BUDGET FORESEES EXTENSION OF AGRICULTURAL WORK OF THE ORT, CREATION OF POSSIBILITIES FOR TECHNICAL TRAINING FOR POOR JEWS AND MAKING PROVISION FOR EMIGRATION OF PROFESSIONALLY-TRAINED JEWS FROM EASTERN AND CENTRAL EUROPE.

JOSEPH BASKIN, OF NEW YORK, SAID AMERICA WAS FAVORABLE TO ORT WORK AND WOULD GIVE IT FULL SUPPORT. A RECEPTION FOR THE DELEGATES WAS HELD AT THE PARIS INTERNATIONAL EXPOSITION TODAY.

THE JEWS ARE TOO PREOCCUPIED WITH FIGHTING ANTI-SEMITISM AND DEVOTE INSUFFICIENT ENERGY TO A REALISTIC TREATMENT OF THEIR ECONOMIC PROBLEMS, THE CONGRESS WAS TOLD BY DR. SINGALOWSKY.

SIMULTANEOUS WITH DEFENSE OF THE JEWISH ECONOMIC POSITION AGAINST ANTI-SEMITIC ATTACKS A REGROUPING OF THE ECONOMIC STRUCTURE IS NECESSARY, DR. SINGALOWSKY SAID, THROUGH THE DEVELOPMENT OF INDUSTRIAL, AGRICULTURAL AND ARTISAN VOCATIONS AMONG THE JEWS.

IMMIGRATION AT BEST WILL NOT EXCEED THE NATURAL INCREASE IN JEWISH POPULATION, HE ADDED, AND THEREFORE JEWISH ECONOMIC POLICY SHOULD BE THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE JEWISH LABOR MARKET TO RELIEVE OVERCROWDED PROFESSIONS.
