RACIAL ANIMOSITIES WILL FADE AS PUBLIC OPINION ON THE COLLEGE CAMPUS IS BUILT ON INTELLECTUAL COMPETENCE AND SOCIAL TOLERANCE, DR. WILLIAM MATHER LEWIS, PRESIDENT OF LAFAYETTE COLLEGE, SAID TODAY AT A ROUND-TABLE CONFERENCE ON “THE COLLEGE CAMPUS” AT THE 1937 WILLIAMSTOWN INSTITUTE OF HUMAN RELATIONS. THE INSTITUTE, UNDER THE AUSPICES OF THE NATIONAL COUNCIL OF JEWS AND CHRISTIANS, OPENED YESTERDAY AND CONTINUES UNTIL FRIDAY.

DR. MATHER SAID:

“THE STUDENT SHOULD BE ENCOURAGED TO KNOW, NOT TO GUESS; TO RISE ABOVE THE INFLUENCE OF SOPHISTRY AND PROPAGANDA; TO BE EMOTIONALLY STABLE. TO BE ALL THESE THINGS HE MUST HAVE CULTIVATED HIS REASONING POWERS AND HIS ABILITY TO WEIGH EVIDENCE FAIRLY BEFORE COMING TO ANY DECISION. AND TO CULTIVATE HIS REASONING POWERS HE MUST STUDY MATHEMATICS AS WELL AS THE SOCIAL SCIENCES. MUCH OF OUR POLITICAL THINKING IS LOOSE TODAY BECAUSE OF POORLY PLANNED CURRICULA. THE TRULY EDUCATED MAN OR WOMAN DOES NOT ACCEPT ANYTHING AS A FACT AND INCORPORATE IT INTO THE PHILOSOPHY OF HIS LIFE UNTIL HE HAS SUBJECTED IT TO THE ACID TEST OF INTELLECTUAL ANALYSIS.

“WHEN WE REALLY ADOPT SUCH A STANDARD OF EDUCATION IN OUR COLLEGES, ENLIGHTENED PUBLIC OPINION WILL GROW AND RACIAL ANIMOSITIES WILL FADE BECAUSE THE STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE WILL BE A MAN’S VALUE TO SOCIETY.”
