SIGN UP FOR THE JTA DAILY BRIEFING

A SCHEME TO UNITE ALL JEWISH PARTIES FOR THE DEFENCE AND DEVELOPMENT OF YIDDISH LANGUAGE AND CULTURE WAS LAUNCHED TODAY BY THE WORLD CONGRESS FOR THE DEFENCE OF YIDDISH CULTURE AT ITS CLOSING SESSION.

THE CONGRESS DECIDED TO FOUND A WORLD YIDDISH CULTURAL UNION TO CENTRALIZE CULTURAL WORK IN ALL COUNTRIES. A CENTRAL COMMITTEE OF 85 REPRESENTATIVES OF ALL COUNTRIES WHERE YIDDISH IS SPOKEN WAS ELECTED, INCLUDING DAVID IGNATOV, KALMAN MARMOR, JOSEPH OPATOSHU, H. LEIVICK AND MOISSAYE OLGIN OF THE UNITED STATES.

A MANIFESTO EXPLAINING THE AIMS OF THE UNION SAYS: ” IN THIS TRAGIC MOMENT WHEN THE VERY EXISTENCE OF THE JEWISH PEOPLE IS THREATENED IN MANY COUNTRIES IT IS COMFORTING TO NOTE THE STEADY DEVELOPMENT OF YIDDISH AND THE DESIRE TO UPHOLD JEWISH CULTURE AMONG THE WIDEST CLASSES OF THE JEWISH PEOPLE.”

THE CONGRESS ALSO DECIDED TO CREATE A CENTER FOR THE YIDDISH THEATRE, SCHOOLS AND PUBLICATIONS, AS WELL AS A JEWISH BOOK CLUB.
