Religious Protests Move League to Drop Calendar Reform Agenda

SIGN UP FOR THE JTA DAILY BRIEFING

THE LEAGUE OF NATIONS COUNCIL, HEEDING RELIGIOUS OBJECTIONS, HAS DECIDED TO REMOVE THE QUESTION OF CALENDAR REFORM FROM ITS AGENDA. THE PROPOSAL TO DROP THE SUBJECT WAS MADE BY MAXIM LITVINOFF, SOVIET FOREIGN COMMISSAR, AND ASSENTED TO BY AUGUSTIN EDWARDS OF CHILE, WHO HAD PUT IT ON THE AGENDA.

JEWISH RELIGIOUS GROUPS PROTESTED THE PROPOSED CALENDAR REFORM CHIEFLY BECAUSE AN EIGHT-DAY WEEK WOULD CAUSE THE SABBATH TO FALL ON A DIFFERENT DAY EACH WEEK. THE JEWISH COMMITTEE ON CALENDAR REFORM, HEADED BY GRAND RABBI ISRAEL LEVI OF FRANCE, WITH CHIEF RABBI J.H. HERTZ OF GREAT BRITAIN AS CHAIRMAN OF THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE, ISSUED A STATEMENT OPPOSING THE REFORM IN LONDON PRIOR TO THE COUNCIL’S ACTION.
