Tripolitan Jews Accused of Lukewarm Loyalty to Italy

THE NEWSPAPER AZIONE COLONIALE, CONSIDERED CLOSE TO THE ITALIAN GOVERNMENT, WARNED THE JEWS OF TRIPOLI IN AN EDITORIAL TODAY THAT THEY WERE FAILING TO DEMONSTRATE SUFFICIENT LOYALTY TO ROME.

COMMENTING ON THE PUBLICATION OF A CALENDAR BY THE JEWS OF THE ITALIAN NORTH AMERICAN POSSESSION, THE PAPER DECLARED THAT “NOTHING IS SAID IN THE NEW CALENDAR ABOUT A SENSE OF LOYALTY OF THE TRIPOLITAN JEWS TO ITALY.”

“THE CONCERN WHICH THESE JEWS HAVE LATELY CAUSED THE GOVERNMENT, WHICH WAS DISCUSSED IN THE LOCAL AND ITALIAN PRESS, DOES NOT TESTIFY TO THEIR ATTACHMENT TO ITALY,” THE EDITORIAL ASSERTED.

THE PAPER WAS EVIDENTLY REFERRING TO PROTESTS AGAINST AN ORDER ISSUED BY THE ITALIAN GOVERNOR OF TRIPOLI REQUIRING JEWISH MERCHANTS IN THE PRINCIPAL SECTIONS OF THE CITY TO KEEP THEIR SHOPS OPEN ON SATURDAY.
