Governor Lehman

SIGN UP FOR THE JTA DAILY BRIEFING

GOVERNOR HERBERT LEHMAN MADE THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT:

“I AM SHOCKED AND GRIEVED BEYOND WORDS TO HEAR OF THE UNTIMELY DEATH OF ONE OF MY DEAREST FRIENDS — FELIX WARBURG. HE WAS ONE OF MY BELOVED FRIENDS AND I TOOK DEEP PRIDE IN HIS FRIENDSHIP. FOR MORE THAN THIRTY YEARS I HAVE BEEN PRIVILEGED TO WORK WITH

HIM IN CLOSEST ASSOCIATION IN CIVIC, CHARITABLE AND RELIGIOUS ACTIVITIES. HE WAS IN EVERY WAY A WONDERFUL MAN, A GREAT AMERICAN AND A GREAT JEW, BELOVED AND RESPECTED BY ALL WHO KNEW HIM. HE WAS LOYAL, DEVOTED, GENEROUS AND UNTIRING IN SUPPORT OF ALL WORTH WHILE MOVEMENTS WITHOUT REGARD TO RACE, COLOR OR CREED. NEW YORK HAS LOST ONE OF ITS FOREMOST SONS AND THE WORLD AN OUTSTANDING AND IRREPLACEABLE CHARACTER. I CANNOT EXPRESS THE GREAT PERSONAL LOSS I HAVE SUSTAINED IN HIS PASSING.”
