British Troops Press Drive to Clean Up Arab Terrorist Centers

WITH SPORADIC ARAB DISORDERS CONTINUING, BRITISH MILITARY FORCES BEGAN AN INTENSIVE DRIVE TODAY TO MOP UP CENTERS OF TERRORIST ACTIVITIES.

LARGE BODIES OF TROOPS WERE CONCENTRATED IN THE “BLOODY TRIANGLE” OF NABLUS, TULKAREM AND JENIN, ESTABLISHING HEADQUARTERS IN NABLUS, SEAT OF THE ARAB NATIONALIST MOVEMENT.

AT THE SAME TIME, OTHER BRITISH REGIMENTS CONDUCTED MANEUVERS IN THE HAIFA AREA UNDER PERSONAL DIRECTION OF MAJOR-GENERAL WAVELL. PLANES, ARMORED AND RADIO CARS, AND ARTILLERY PARTICIPATED IN THE DISPLAY OF FORCES.

A MILITARY PATROL, ATTACKED BY AN ARAB BAND NEAR TULKAREM, ROUTED THE ATTACKERS WITH MACHINE GUNS. ARAB SOURCES REPORTED A BAND AGAIN ATTACKED THE POLICE POST AT DAHARIA, TARGET OF A RECENT RAID IN WHICH POLICE EQUIPMENT WAS CAPTURED BY THE ARABS. PLANES WERE ORDERED TO THE AREA, IN SOUTHERN PALESTINE, TO LOCATE THE RAIDERS. ONE OF THE PLANES CRASHED, REPORTEDLY BROUGHT DOWN BY ARAB BULLETS. THERE WERE NO CASUALTIES.

A CONSIDERABLE QUANTITY OF ARMS CONSIGNED TO PALESTINE, IT WAS ANNOUNCED HERE, HAS BEEN DISCOVERED BY THE LEBANESE SECRET SERVICE. INVESTIGATION REVEALED EXISTENCE OF A LARGE ORGANIZATION TO SMUGGLE ARMS TO PALESTINE.

THE AUTHORITIES ASSIGNED 130 EXTRA POLICE FOR PATROL DUTY ALONG THE JERUSALEM-LYDDA SECTION OF THE RAILWAY TO PREVENT POSSIBLE SABOTAGE.

A VOLLEY OF SHOTS WAS FIRED INTO THE INTERNATIONAL POTASH COMPANY CONCESSION DURING THE NIGHT. TROOPS FROM THE BLACK WATCH REGIMENT, ENCAMPED IN JERUSALEM, RUSHED TO THE SCENE. RETURNING THIS MORNING THEY WERE FIRED ON FROM THE MOAB HILLS.

ANOTHER MILITARY PATROL WAS FIRED ON AT LONG RANGE ON THE JERUSALEM-NABLUS ROAD. REINFORCEMENTS WERE RUSHED BUT FAILED TO LOCATE THE ATTACKERS.

SHOTS WERE FIRED INTO THE AUSTRIAN HOSPITAL AT NAZARETH. A MILK TRAIN WAS FIRED ON BETWEEN ANEBTA AND DIRESHARF. SEVERAL BOMBS WERE DISCOVERED IN AN ARAB HOUSE IN THE VILLAGE OF BASHITA.

THE MAYOR AND MUKHTARS (ARAB CHIEFTAINS) OF SAFED RESIGNED AFTER THE DISTRICT OFFICER HAD THREATENED THEM WITH EXILE IF PEACE WERE DISTURBED IN THE AREA.

CHIEF RABBI JACOB MEIR OF THE SEPHARDIC JEWISH COMMUNITY ISSUED A MANIFESTO PROCLAIMING A DAY OF FAST AND PRAYERS NOV. 5 FOR STOPPAGE OF THE DISTURBANCES.
