PUNITIVE POLICE POSTS WERE ESTABLISHED IN JEWISH QUARTERS TODAY FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE HISTORY OF THE JEWISH NATIONAL HOME AND THE AUTHORITIES ARRESTED SCORES OF YOUNG ZIONIST REVISIONISTS FOLLOWING THE MOST SERIOUS ARAB-JEWISH CLASHES IN JERUSALEM IN EIGHT YEARS.

THE POSTS WERE PLACED IN THE MACHANE YEHUDA AND BETH ISRAEL QUARTERS OF JERUSALEM, INHABITED BY THE POOREST AND MOST ORTHODOX JEWS, WHERE CLASHES YESTERDAY RESULTED IN THE DEATH OF AN ARAB AND A JEW.

SEARCHES FOR REVISIONISTS CONTINUED THROUGHOUT THE NIGHT, RESULTING IN TOTAL OF 24 ARRESTS IN THE SOUTHERN DISTRICT ALONE, INCLUDING MOSHE GINZBURG, PETACH TIKVAH COUNCILLOR. INCLUDING YESTERDAY’S SEIZURES, SOME 50 REVISIONISTS HAVE BEEN ARRESTED IN CONNECTION WITH THE CITY-WIDE OUTBREAKS SUNDAY WHICH RESULTED IN DEATH TO SIX ARABS AND ONE JEW, AND SERIOUS WOUNDING OF MANY OTHERS. ALL THOSE HELD WILL BE TRIED UNDER THE GOVERNMENT’S EMERGENCY REGULATIONS BEFORE AN ADMINISTRATIVE JUDGE SITTING AT JAFFA.

DURING THE NIGHT, FOURTEEN WERE ARRESTED IN TEL AVIV, INCLUDING ERI JABOTINSKY, SON OF THE LEADER OF THE WORLD REVISIONIST MOVEMENT; ABA ACHIMEIER AND DR. FROELICH. EIGHT MEMBERS OF THE BRITH TRUMPELDOR, REVISIONIST YOUTH CORPS, WERE ROUTED OUT OF THEIR BEDS AT REHOVOTH AND ARRESTED. FURTHER ARRESTS WERE MADE AT RISHON-LE-ZION AND NESS ZIONA.

PLACARDS APPEARED ON THE JAFFA-TEL AVIV BORDER EXHORTING THE ARABS TO REVOLT AGAINST THE JEWS AND THE BRITISH ADMINISTRATION.

STUDENTS AT RAUDATH EL MARREF COLLEGE, AN ARAB INSTITUTION, AND AT TWO GOVERNMENT ARAB PRIMARY SCHOOLS STAGED A STRIKE TODAY, REPORTEDLY AS PROTEST AGAINST YESTERDAY’S DISORDERS.

JERUSALEM WAS IN A STATE OF PANIC EARLY TODAY. AT MIDNIGHT, THE STREETS WERE FILLED WITH BRITISH SOLDIERS, AND TRUCKS MOUNTING MACHINE-GUNS WERE CRUISING THE STREETS TO GUARD AGAINST A RENEWAL OF THE CLASHES, WHICH ORIGINATED WITH ATTACKS BELIEVED TO HAVE BEEN DIRECTED FROM A CENTRAL SOURCE.

THE DISORDERS, WHICH BROKE OUT EARLY YESTERDAY MORNING, CAUGHT THE POLICE BY SURPRISE. BY NIGHTFALL THE AUTHORITIES WERE ENTERTAINING THE LIVELIEST FEARS REGARDING DEVELOPMENTS OF THE NEXT FEW DAYS.

AS WILDLY EXAGGERATED RUMORS OVERRAN THE CITY, LARGE AND EXCITED CROWDS GATHERED, WHICH MOUNTED POLICE ATTEMPTED TO DISPERSE. WHAT BUSINESS HAD BEEN IN PROGRESS WAS PRACTICALLY SUSPENDED.

IN THE WAKE OF YESTERDAY’S ATTACKS ARAB-JEWISH CLASHES OCCURRED ALONG THE JAFFA ROAD FROM THE ROMEMA QUARTER OF THE CITY TO MACHANE YEHUDA, IN WHICH ONE JEW WAS STABBED. ALL SHOPS, EXCEPT THOSE IN THE CENTER OF THE CITY, WERE CLOSED AND SHUTTERED.

LONG AFTER THE FIVE P.M. CURFEW HOUR IMPOSED BY THE AUTHORITIES SPORADIC SHOTS WERE HEARD.

AN ARAB BAND SET FIRE TO AND DESTROYED THE RAILROAD STATION AT BETH YOSEF, JEWISH COLONY IN THE BEISAN AREA.

ISAAC BEN-ZVI, CHAIRMAN OF THE JEWISH NATIONAL COUNCIL, CONFERRED WITH ACTING HIGH COMMISSIONER BATTERSHILL ON YESTERDAY’S DEVELOPMENTS.
