DR. WALTHER FUNK, GERMAN PRESS CHIEF, TODAY REPLACED DR. HJALMAR SCHACHT AS REICH MINISTER OF ECONOMICS. ALTHOUGH DEPRIVED OF HIS ECONOMY POST, SCHACHT, WHO ROSE TO WORLD PROMINENCE AS “SAVIOR” OF THE GERMAN MARK AND “FINANCIAL WIZARD” OF THE NAZI REICH’S TRADE PROGRAM, RETAINS THE PRESIDENCY OF THE REICHSBANK AND WILL SERVE IN THE CABINET AS MINISTER WITHOUT PORTFOLIO.

THE NEWLY-APPOINTED 47-YEAR-OLD ECONOMICS MINISTER HAS SERVED AS PROPAGANDA MINISTER GOEBBELS’ RIGHT-HAND MAN IN THE PRESS DEPARTMENT SINCE JANUARY, 1933. FROM 1922 UNTIL 1930 HE WAS EDITOR-IN-CHIEF OF THE INFLUENTIAL BERLINER BOERSEN ZEITUNG. AFTER HE QUIT ACTIVE NEWSPAPER WORK AND UNTIL HIS APPOINTMENT AS PRESS CHIEF, FUNK WAS CHANCELLOR HITLER’S SPECIAL DEPUTY ON ECONOMIC AFFAIRS IN THE NAZI PARTY.
