202 American Educations Appeal Against “ghetto Benches”

TWO HUNDRED AND TWO LEADERS OF THE ACADEMIC WORLD, MEMBERS OF THE FACULTIES OF 64 OUTSTANDING AMERICAN UNIVERSITIES, JOINED TODAY IN PROTEST AGAINST THE INSTITUTION OF “GHETTO” BENCHES IN POLAND, AND, IN AN OPEN LETTER TO THEIR COLLEAGUES IN THE UNIVERSITIES OF POLAND, APPEALED TO THEM “TO OPPOSE THIS PLAN OF SEGREGATION” AS “ALIEN TO THE SPIRIT OF ACADEMIC FREEDOM AND OF THE FREE COOPERATION IN THE PURSUIT OF KNOWLEDGE THAT IS SO ESSENTIAL TO THE WORLD OF SCHOLARSHIP.”

THE ACTION BY AMERICAN SCHOLARS WAS ANNOUNCED BY DR. ALVIN JOHNSON, PRESIDENT OF THE AMERICAN SECTION OF THE INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE FOR ACADEMIC FREEDOM, UNIVERSITY PROFESSORS SIGNED THE PROTEST AGAINST THE INSTITUTION OF GHETTO BENCHES IN POLAND AFTER THEIR ATTENTION HAD BEEN CALLED TO THE SITUATION BY THE INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE FOR ACADEMIC FREEDOM, IN A COMMUNICATION SIGNED BY DR. JOHNSON AS PRESIDENT, PROF. JOHN DEWEY OF COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY PROF. ALBERT EINSTEIN OF THE INSTITUTE OF ADVANCED STUDY; PROF. WESLEY C. MITCHELL OF COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY, VICE-PRESIDENTS OF THE LEAGUE; AND PROF. HORACE M. KALLEN, ITS SECRETARY.
