AFTER REPEATED DELAYS OCCASIONED BY GERMAN GOVERNMENT INTERFERENCE, YEHUDI MENUHIN WAS SCHEDULED TONIGHT TO PERFORM THE AMERICAN PREMIERE OF THE VIOLIN CONCERTO IN D MINOR OF ROBERT SCHUMANN BEFORE A CAPACITY AUDIENCE OF 2,800 IN CARNEGIE HALL. THE GERMAN GOVERNMENT WOULD NOT PERMIT HIM TO PERFORM THE WORK UNTIL IT HAD FIRST BEEN PLAYED IN GERMANY. THE RECITAL WAS MENUHIN’S FIRST IN NEW YORK SINCE HIS TWO-YEAR RETIREMENT FROM THE CONCERT STAGE.
