Colonial Secretary Denies Revisionists Singled out for Preventive Arrest

SIGN UP FOR THE JTA DAILY BRIEFING

COLONIAL SECRETARY WILLIAM ORMSBY-GORE CATEGORICALLY DENIED IN HOUSE OF COMMONS TODAY THAT ZIONIST REVISIONISTS ALONE HAD BEEN SINGLED OUT FOR DETENTION ON CHARGES OF ENCOURAGING REPRISALS AGAINST ARABS IN PALESTINE. HE DEFENDED THE POLICE POWER OF PREVENTIVE ARREST, DECLARING IT WAS MOST ESSENTIAL WHERE THERE WAS REASON TO BELIEVE IN THE EXISTENCE OF THREATS OR ENCOURAGEMENT TO VIOLENT ACTION.

ADDRESSING THE ANGLO-PALESTINE CLUB LAST NIGHT ON PALESTINE AND THE LEAGUE OF NATIONS, GEOFFREY MANDER, LIBERAL M.P., VOICED THE BELIEF THAT THE MANDATE WAS WORKABLE IF ENGLAND WERE DETERMINED TO CARRY OUT HER OBLIGATIONS. HE SAID THE ROYAL COMMISSION’S SCHEME FOR PARTITION WAS “HOPELESSLY INADEQUATE” AND EXPRESSED THE CONVICTION THAT THE NEGEB, IN SOUTHERN PALESTINE, HAD GREAT POSSIBILITIES AND SHOULD REMAIN UNDER CONTROL OF GREAT BRITAIN.
