Southbury Town Meeting Adopts Zoning Law Barring Nazi Camp

SIGN UP FOR THE JTA DAILY BRIEFING

THIS FARMING COMMUNITY, AT A BITTERLY-FOUGHT THREE-AND-A-HALF-HOUR TOWN MEETING YESTERDAY, VOTED 142 TO 91 TO SET UP ZONING REGULATIONS WHICH WILL HAVE THE EFFECT OF PREVENTING THE PRO-NAZI GERMAN-AMERICAN BUND FROM ESTABLISHING A SUMMER CAMP HERE.

THE 178-ACRE TRACT ACQUIRED BY THE BUND IN THE KETTLETOWN DISTRICT OF THE TOWN IS BARRED FROM BEING A CAMP SINCE THE ZONING CODE RESTRICTS IT TO FARMING AND RESIDENTIAL PURPOSES. THE CODE, DRAWN UP SHORTLY AFTER THE BUND ACQUIRED THE PROPERTY, FORBIDS “MARCHING OR DRILLING, WITH OR WITHOUT ARMS, EXCEPT BY THE REGULAR ARMED FORCES OF THE UNITED STATES”
