Bishop Manning Tells Nazi Leaders to Abandon Race Policy for Reich’s Sake

BISHOP WILLIAM T. MANNING, OF THE NEW YORK PROTESTANT EPISCOPAL DIOCESE, EXPRESSED THE HOPE TODAY THAT “FOR THE SAKE OF THE GERMAN PEOPLE” THE NAZI LEADERS “WILL SOON COME TO SENSES” REGARDING THEIR ANTI-SEMITIC POLICY. REPLYING IN A STATEMENT TO AN ATTACK ON HIM BY DER STUERMER, NUREMBERG ANTI-SEMITIC WEEKLY, FOR HIS DENUNCIATION OF ANTI-SEMITISM IN AN ADDRESS AT THE MEETING OF THE NATIONAL COMMITTEE FOR RELIGIOUS AND WELFARE RECOVERY, BISHOP MANNING SAID THAT RACIAL OR RELIGIOUS PERSECUTION WAS “CONTRARY TO ALL CIVILIZED IDEALS AND TO EVERY PRINCIPLE OF THE CHRISTIAN RELIGION.”
