THE CONFLICT IN PALESTINE IS DEPLORED AND PERSECUTION OF JEWS DENOUNCED IN AN EDITORIAL IN THE CHRISTMAS ISSUE OF OSSERVATORE ROMANO, OFFICIAL VATICAN ORGAN. THE EDITORIAL DECLARES THAT FOR CHRISTIANS THE JEWISH PROBLEM IS A RELIGIOUS ONE AND CONTINUES:

“ANTI-SEMITISM OF THE PRESENT ERA IS NOT ONLY A FIGHT AGAINST THE NATIONAL ASPIRATIONS OF THE JEWISH PEOPLE, BUT IS ALSO AN ASPECT OF THE FIGHT PROVOKED BY THE NEW PAGANISM IN LARGE SECTIONS OF INTERNATIONAL POLITICAL LIFE.” THE EDITORIAL ATTRIBUTES THE PALESTINE CONFLICT TO IMMIGRATION FROM EUROPE AS A RESULT OF POLITICAL PERSECUTION OF JEWS THERE.
