Intensification of the economic pressure against the Jews of Germany is expected during 1938, the J.T.A. here learns reliably.

Various factors combine to make an increased campaign against the Jews in the economic sphere certain. Firstly, Dr. Schacht has definitely left the Reichsministry of Economics. He alone had the courage to oppose the economic measures against Jews, seeing in them a danger for the German economy. Secondly, the radical anti-Semitic Nazi chiefs are now occupying leading posts in Germany and are exerting a greater influence on Jewish policy. Streicher, Ley., Rosenberg and Goebbels are those whose influence is felt in economic life and their power is growing daily. Thirdly, the campaign for the economic elimination of the Jews has lately been justified on the ground that Jews might conspire with Germany’s enemies in any future war, or cause other damage.

It is interesting to note that recently a tendency has become noticeable not to encourage any more emigration to Palestine. The reasons for this extraordinary move are not absolutely certain; evidently the possibility of the establishment of a Jewish State is taken into consideration and its strengthening through emigration from Germany is feared, because of possible political reactions of the proposed Jewish State. On the other hand, there is among the Nazis also a desire to establish better relations with the Arabs, and for this reason Jewish emigration from Germany to Palestine is being restricted.

Beginning with January, 1938, Berlin newspapers have been forbidden to accept any business advertisements from Jews. The same prohibition is to be introduced in Hamburg in about six months’ time. Jewish firms producing and distributing proprietary articles will suffer severely from this prohibition.
