German Ambassador Hans Dieckhoff orally protested to Secretary of State Cordell Hull today against William E. Dodd’s New York address last night as an “unheard-of insult” to a friendly nation and was reminded of Americans’ freedom of speech.
Ambassador Dieckhoff referred to remarks made by the former Ambassador to Germany. Dr. Dodd, addressing a dinner in his honor at the Hotel Waldorf-Astoria, described Hitler’s suppression of freedom, execution of personal enemies, his aims to rule Europe and persecution of Jews.
Mr. Hull announced at his press conference that he had told Herr Dieckhoff that since his resignation as Ambassador, Dr. Dodd was a private citizen; his utterances did not represent the views of the Government, and that Americans have freedom of speech.
