Sir Harold Alfred MacMichael, accompanied by his family, arrived here from England today to replace Sir Arthur Grenfell Wauchope as High Commissioner, Greeted at the railway station by officials and dignitaries including Crown Prince Tallal of the Transjordan, he went directly to Government House for administration of the oath by Chief Justice Harry H. Trusted.
Special guards had been posted every kilometer along the route from Haifa, where Sir Harold had been brought by H.M.S. Enterprise, to Jerusalem. Three coaches of soldiers were coupled to his train. The special precautions followed a mine explosion on the tracks yesterday between Hartuv and Dir es-Sheikh, in which the Jerusalem train was damaged.
A Jewish and an Arab policeman were seriously wounded yesterday in Haifa when fired upon in the market place. The area was immediately surrounded by police, but no trace of the assailants was found. The Jewish policeman is Alfred Kuvlin, and the Arab, Yacoub Menakha.
The Supreme Court yesterday freed Julius Silverman, German Jew who was arrested last July at Haifa and was convicted in January of smuggling arms into Palestine. The court overruled his conviction.
