The great synagogue here will be the first house of worship in the country to have a gas and bomb-proof shelter. The synagogue is now undergoing alterations. Decision to turn its basement into a refuge in case of air raids by enemy planes was reached by congregation officials after consultations with the mayor of Rotterdam and the Board of Aldermen.
