This city has gone meatless since April 25 as a result of a dispute over prices between the municipal government, a large part of the retail butchers, and the Federation of Jewish Labor, on the one hand, and the importers of beef cattle on the other.
Charging the importers’ “beef trust” with operating a price-fixing agreement which kept the retail price of meat artificially high, retail butchers closed their shops in a strike. When the importers sought to sell through “strikebreaking” shops, the labor federation called out the workers in the municipal slaughter house.
