The problem of restricting the number of Austrian refugee physicians permitted to practice in Britain was evoked anew during question time in the House of Commons today by John H. Morris-Jones, Conservative. Home Secretary Sir Samuel Hoare declared he had been in contact with representative British physicians and had agreed with them on the number of refugee doctors to be admitted.
A week ago the powerful medical practitioners’ organization, which has 6,000 members and is affiliated with the Trades Union Congress, threatened a “sit-down” strike if licenses were issued to Austrian doctors to practice in Britain. The group, which is distinct from the British Medical Association, had sent pamphlets of protest to every physician practicing in the British Isles.
