The authorities today refused to extend residential permits of refugees, explaining that the question had not yet been settled by the intergovernmental Refugee Committee and that Czechoslovakia vas a country of transit only.
Negotiations are being conducted with the Interior Ministry on the fate of 400 refugees whose permits expired yesterday. Representatives of the refugees have wired to president Eduard Benes requesting extension of their permits and pointing out the “terrible fate” awaiting those who are forced to return to Austria.
two hundred Austrian Jews were arrested last week at Undenburg, on the Czechoslovak-Austrian border, it was learned here today. All but twenty of them will be returned to Austria. Those remaining will be allowed to stay if relatives living in Czechoslovakia post guarantees that they will not become public charges.
