The laborite Daily Herald declared editorially today that “the British Empire is fitted by its standing in the world to take the lead in giving an effective opportunity to refugees to lead happy and valuable lives.”

“Let us not shame the traditions of British democracy by telling people to burn, drown, suffer and go anywhere, save knock at our door,” the paper said, discussing the alleged alien influx into England. “Every nation must do its share. Parts of the British Empire are undeveloped and underpopulated.”
