Exile Decree Hit As ‘act of Brutality’

Exploring several possible explanations of the Italian edict expelling foreign Jews, the New York Times in an editorial Saturday termed the measure “one more of those acts of brutality which darken the history of our times.”

The editorial concludes: “The result of the Government’s action is that some ten thousand people who have been living quietly and peacefully and no doubt usefully in Italy must now pull up stakes and seek refuge in a cheerless world. Some of these people are American citizens, and our State Department quite properly undertook yesterday to determine how their interests will be affected. They will need friends. For they are victims of one more of those acts of brutality which darken the history of our times.”
