Vienna’s Nazi press bureau was taken to task today by osservatore Romano, Vatican organ, for its attacks on those German Catholic bishops who recently drafted a pastoral letter scoring Reich anti-Church measures. The pastoral letter, drafted at fulda and read in Catholic churches throughout the Reich on Aug. 28, accused the Nazis, of seeking to destroy the Church.

Osservatore Romano charged the press bureau was “an anti-Catholic agitator.” it branded as “gross lies” charges by the Vienna bureau that the German Bishops were Allied with Jews, Masons and Bolsheviks.

“We affirm that persecution is a double-edged weapon, wounding him who is struck but inflicting worse wounds on him who wields it,” the Osservatore stated.
