Consulate officials of all countries continued today to be bombarded by useless and pitiful pleas for intervention on behalf of Jews seized in mass arrests. The crush at the consulates has been so great that the officials have been unable to attend to their ordinary visa and emigration routine. Even Jews in possession of affidavits and other documents for emigration have been held back through inability of the over-worked consulates to cope with the panic-stricken Jewish populace.

The Essener Nationalzeitung, Field Marshal Hermann Goering’s organ, forecast a physical ghetto for Jews, thus bluntly clashing with a statement by Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels. After referring to the church-established ghettos in the Middle Ages, the newspaper declared effective fulfillment of the new laws concerning Jews would most likely be followed by launching of a similar development.

The authorities impounded Jewish bank accounts. Jews calling at banks to make withdrawals found that their accounts had been entirely closed or that withdrawals were limited to practically their daily expenses.
