Former Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin tonight inaugurated the inter-denominational London Baldwin Fund for Refugees with a radio broadcast (heard in the United States through the Mutual Broadcasting System) in which he called on Britain to be in the forefront of aid for German refugees. Almost $2,500,000 had been pledged to the fund in advance.
Speaking as representative of refugee-aid organizations of all faiths in England, Earl Baldwin urged “the governments of the world to consult together and see what they may accomplish in the way of settling these unhappy people,” adding the hope that “Great Britain will not lag behind.” He also bespoke Germany’s cooperation, which, he said, “would make all the difference to the ultimate success of any proposals for immigration.”
