It was reliably reported tonight that the future course of Jewish emigration from the Reich may hinge on the result of the visit of Dr. Hjalmar Schacht, president of the Reichsbank, to Basel for the meeting of the Bank for International Settlements and his subsequent visit to London.
It is generally believed here that the Reich is determined to use the 600,000 Reich Jews as a lever to pry open new world markets. Informed circles link Dr. Schacht’s visit with plans known to be under consideration by Reich officials under which the transfer problem would be settled by foisting German exports on countries receiving emigrants. It is reliably reported that Dr. Schacht is already in touch with colleagues of his regarding these proposals and intends to discuss them further in Basel and London.
