The conditions of Jewish populations overseas are at present worse than ever before and require the largest measure of assistance from Jews of this country, Joseph C. Hyman, executive director of the Joint Distribution Committee, declared today at an all-day conference of the Middle Atlantic Region of the J.D.C. “In the face of chaotic conditions,” Mr. Hyman said, “the Jews of Central and Eastern Europe are today living on faith alone.”
Albert H. Lieberman, Philadelphia, was re-elected chairman of the Middle Atlantic Region, The conference also voted to add three new areas to the region –Virginia, West Virginia, and Western Pennsylvania. Besides Mr. Hyman and Mr. Lieberman, speakers included Paul Baerwald, New York, chairman of the J.D.C.; William B. Thalhimer, Richmond, Va., national co-chairman of the Resettlement Division of the National Coordinating Committee; Dr. Solomon Goldman, Chicago, co-chairman of the United Jewish Appeal; Isidor Coons, New York, executive vice-chairman of the United Jewish Appeal; Mrs. Lois Hollander Cole, New York, national chairman of the Junior Division of the J.D.C. Kurt Peiser, executive director of the Philadelphia Federation of Jewish Charities; and Louis E. Spiegler, Washington.
