An estimated $40,000 was caused to property here and in Tel Aviv by bomb explosions yesterday and Wednesday, it was ascertained today. Eight blasts that started several fires, blew up four electrical substations and plunged a third of Jerusalem into darkness last night, did damage estimated at $25,000. The Tel Aviv explosions damaged telephone conduits to the extent of $15,000.
A big unexploded bomb, set to go off at 11 a.m., was found outside the Jerusalem Central Prison near police headquarters this morning. An official communique said police saw a 22-year-old Yemenite girl, Rachel Hawatani, place a basket containing the bomb among a group of Arabs outside the prison. The girl was arrested. Arabs charged she had also placed an unexploded bomb near the Jerusalem military court.
Dr. Anwer Shukeiri, a leader of the Palestine Defense Party, was shot dead last night in Acre.
The Jewish Agency observed King George’s birthday yesterday by hoisting the Union Jack alongside of the Zionist emblem. Special prayers were said in synagogues. However, all representatives of the Jewish Community were absent from the High Commissioner’s reception in honor of the monarch’s birthday, except Government officials and members of the non-Zionist Agudath Israel.
