Germany will permit Memel refugees to return to supervise liquidation of their property without interference by the German authorities, it was officially announced today. The process of liquidation, however, must be completed by Aug. 21.

The German Government, in a special note to the Lithuanian Government, declared its decision was taken under the terms of the German-Lithuanian trade agreement. The note gave assurances that Memel Jews would be permitted to return and would be treated as Lithuanian citizens, being allowed to sell their property, including houses, factories and goods, on the spot or through specially authorized representatives.

Money received for the refugees’ property, it was stated, will be placed in a special account to be transferred to Lithuania through the usual clearing agreements in the form of goods and machinery.
