“Considerable concern has been caused in the City by reports that Germany and South Africa are to negotiate a new payments agreement involving German purchases in the Union of £10,000,000 (about $50,000,000,000) with a corresponding increase in South African purchases,” the Financial News said today.
“Germany already is the biggest buyer of South African wool and increase in trade to this figure would give the Reich a monopoly of South African wool exports,” the newspaper added. “City circles are particularly concerned about the political dangers of this German incursion into an essentially British market, especially in view of South Africa’s strong pro-German minorities, her geographical proximity to former German colonies and her vital position on Empire trade routes.”
