Kuhn Admits to Dies Committee He Destroyed Bund Records Cooperated with Coughlin

Fritz Kuhn leader of the German American Bund, today admitted to the Dies Committee resuming its investigation of un American activities, that he had ordered the organization s membership lists destroyed a year ago in anticipation of an official inquiry into the Bund s affairs. “I destroyed the records to protect my members,” he said. “If it is found out that they belong to the Bund, they may lose their jobs.”

Kuhn told the committee he had cooperated at various times with Father Charles E. Coughlin, the Christian Front the Silver Shirts and other organizations with “the same objectives as ours.”

Kuhn was questioned in detail about his organization and his own record. He testified among other things that he gets a salary of $300 monthly his brother is a Supreme Court Justice in Berlin the Bund has about 20,000 members and about three times as many enrolled “sympathizers.”
